Welcome to OpticsThoughts!

The website you are looking at is sort of a “OpticsThoughts 2.0″, although as far as look at feel goes, it should not be a major difference from the original site.  That having been said, we did change the backend for the site and, hopefully, it will be a bit easier to maintain.

Most of the material here is on the subject of sporting optics: riflescopes, binoculars and spotters.  We will occasionally add some general musing on the firearms, knives and whatever else occupies my mind at that particular time.  Since my day job is in electro-optics and digital imaging, I will also add some camera gear recommendation here and there.

I started out this site primarily to have a venue for my thoughts on sporting optics, but it has expanded some.  Aside from writing about things that interest me, I also serve as a editor for others whose work appears here.

If you want to know more about how this site came to be and he are the people behind it, look into “About Opticsthoughts” on your right.

If all you are looking for is a quick product recommendation here is a shortcut to some of my favourites, by price: Riflescopes, Binoculars, Spotters.

If you would like to comment on any of the articles you need to create an account here.  Contact me if you need help with that.

With that out of the way, I hope you find something useful here and if there is something you think I should add to the site, do not hesitate to let me know.

Thanks for visiting!

Sig Optics

I received a couple of items from Sig Electro Optics to look at: Tango 6 3-18×44 riflescope and Romeo 4C red dot. I did a very brief side by side of the Tango 6 against Leupodl Mark 6 3-18×44 and Nightforce ATACR F1 4-16×42 and the Tango6 is holding its own pretty well.  It is [...]

Cameras: The Age of Enthusiast Compact, continued

In an earlier post I went over the available cameras with 1″ sensor (16mm diagonal) and opined that there is now enough variety of point and shoot cameras built around that sensor size to make it the best allround choice for just about anyone who wants high quality pictures, but is not really into cameras [...]

Athlon Optics: First Impressions

Athlon Optics: First Impressions

I mounted the Cronus 1-6×24 on my 458SOCOM and headed off to the range.  45 Cal bullet holes are not very hard to see even with 6x, but since I had a smaller caliber rifle with me as well, I took the diminutive Athlon Ares 7.5-22.5×50 spotter along. At first blush, I like both optics [...]

Pelican backpack

I do not usually post sales updates and things like that, but I just saw this in my email and thought it deserved a short blurb. Pelican makes what they call a “tablet” backpack which has a built in hard plastic case, presumably for protecting that same tablet.  I found that it is an awesome [...]

Vortex Razor HD LH Riflescopes

Vortex Razor HD LH Riflescopes

In my SHOT 2016 description I mentioned that Vortex has a new line of hunting scopes called Razor HD LH and that they looked pretty good. I now have these in hand and preliminary testing suggests that they are everything I thought they would be.  I need to do a more thorough check-up to be [...]

Athlon Optics

I received a couple of Athlon products to look at: Cronus 1-6x24FFP riflescope Ares 7.5-22×50 spotting scope At first blush both are looking pretty good, but I’ll obviously be doing more testing. The diminutive Ares spotter is unique in its configuration and appears to be excellent for the money. The Cronus is a full featured [...]

Cameras: The Age Of The Enthusiast Compact

March 21, 2016 My dayjob involves spending a lot of time with cameras, since the company I work for makes image sensors and our customers are camera makers.  I am extremely fortunate to have a job that crosses over so strongly with one of my major hobbies.  Now, this website is largely dedicated to one [...]

Nikon Riflescopes 2015/2016

Nikon Riflescopes 2015/2016

Every once in a while, I sorta look around the marketplace and see if there is a brand I have not had a chance to pay much attention to in the last couple of years for whatever reason. Early last year, I realized that I have not looked at Nikon very much, largely because I [...]

SHOT 2016 impressions

I only went for one day this year, so here are some early impressions: http://opticsthoughts.com/?page_id=1510

Rimfire and Airgun scopes, January 2016

One of the trends I have been seeing in the last few years is the growth of airgun shooting.  Oddly enough rimfire shooting took a dive for a bit since rimfire ammo has been virtually impossible to find.  Now, however, the supply has caught up to a certain degree. I wrote an overview of rimfire [...]
