Welcome to OpticsThoughts!

The website you are looking at is sort of a “OpticsThoughts 2.0”, although as far as look at feel goes, it should not be a major difference from the original site.  We did change the backend for the site and, hopefully, it will be a bit easier to maintain.

Most of the material here is on the subject of sporting optics: riflescopes, binoculars and spotters.  I will occasionally add some general musing on the firearms, knives and whatever else occupies my mind at that particular time.  Since my day job is in electro-optics and digital imaging, I will also add some camera gear recommendation here and there.

I started this site primarily to have a venue for my thoughts on sporting optics, but it has expanded some.  Aside from writing about things that interest me, I also serve as an editor for others whose work occasionally appears here.

If you want to know more about how this site came to be and who are the people behind it, look into “About OpticsThoughts” on your right.

If all you are looking for is a quick product recommendation here is a shortcut to some of my favourites, by price: Riflescopes, Binoculars, Spotters.

Also, as I go along, I record my impressions on video and upload them to YouTube here.  Alternatively, you can simply search for DLO Reviews.

If you would like to comment on any of the articles you need to create an account here.  Contact me if you need help with that.

Lastly, I keep advertising very light and only insert a few Google or Amazon Ads here and there.  I do not have any control of what is actually in the ad, as it reflects whoever is browsing.  If you click on the ads every once in a while, maintaining this site will be easier for me.  If you will be buying something from Amazon anyway, click on the Amazon banner on this website.  It makes no practical difference to you, but every little bit adds up for me.

Where appropriate, I’ll add product links to retailers here and there.  Where the links go will vary a fair bit.  I have an affiliate contract with a few places (Amazon, Brownells, Adorama, etc).

If you would like to help me keep this site up, use the links, click on the ads or donate via Paypal at paypal.me/DarkLordOfOptics

With all that out of the way, I hope you find something useful here and if there is something you think I should add to the site, do not hesitate to let me know.

Thanks for visiting!

Burris LPVOs

I was busy trying to wrap up my article on 8x erector ratio low power scopes, when I got an e-mail from Geoff from Burris saying something along the lines of “we’ve got this whole Burris blog thing going, do you have any interest in writing a guest post on what to look for in […]

New Tangent Theta Reticle: Gen3 XR

New Tangent Theta Reticle: Gen3 XR

The new Tangent Theta reticle is finally out and it seems to be a really well conceived design.  I saw a couple of versions of it earlier on, wasn’t allowed to talk about it. Tangent Theta got a lot of criticism in recent years for persistently staying with the reticle designs they had.  I am […]

StraightJacket Tensioned Barrels

One of the nice things about the whole gun and optics world is that you get to meet a large variety of people who are exceedingly good at what they do.  That is a great thing for people like me who are always trying to figure something out. Some years ago I ran into David […]

DLO Reviews: SWFA SS UL 2.5-10x32 update (BDC reticle and durability)

DLO Reviews: SWFA SS UL 2.5-10×32 update (BDC reticle and durability)

I have been playing with the plex version of this scope for a little bit now and have published a first look article a while back. Now, the good people from SWFA sent me a prototype with the BDC reticle to play with.  The specific reticle in this scope is not quite the same as […]

DLO Review: Sig Electro-Optics Bravo4 Battle Sight

DLO Review: Sig Electro-Optics Bravo4 Battle Sight

August 20, 2018 Sig being sorta new (still) to the optics world, I take my sweet time before I publish publish reviews of their products.  I spend a significant amount of time using the optics I review and the newer the brand the longer I take.  I am sure the guys at Sig do not […]

Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18x44 Mini Review

Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18×44 Mini Review

By Bill Meyer (Glassaholic) Background: The name Leupold, or more officially Leupold & Stevens, Inc., has been around for over 100 years, having been started by two German immigrants looking for a fresh start in the USA; however, it wasn’t until soon after the end of World War II that Leupold began building riflescopes when […]

Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18x44

Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18×44

Given that writing anything takes me forever these days, I figured I’ll go over most of it in a video. The Mark 5 HD is an interesting design in that it really brings into question whether it was intended to replace the Mark 6 3-18×44 or whether Leupold is planning to carry on with both […]

First Look: SWFA SS 2.5-10x32 Ultralight

First Look: SWFA SS 2.5-10×32 Ultralight

I am fibbing a little. This is not my first look at this scope, since I spent a couple of days with a prototype. However, this the first time I see the production reticle. I mounted the scope on my light-ish AR chambered for 5.56×45. This gun has very light stock and handguard, but the […]

First Look: Leica Tempus Red Dot

First Look: Leica Tempus Red Dot

A little while back, I got a chance to play with a pre-production model of the new Leica Tempus red dot sight.  I only had a day with it before it had to go back, so rather than experimenting with equipment, hooked it up to me 10mm carbine and headed to the range. I spend […]

Answering a question. Sort of.

Answering a question. Sort of.

A few days ago I received a very polite e-mail asking for scope advice.  If memory serves me right, the gentleman who sent me the e-mail, was debating whether to keep his Razor HD LH 1.5-8×32 that he got a screaming deal on or to pick up a similarly priced 1-6x scope of some sort.  […]
