Welcome to OpticsThoughts!

The website you are looking at is sort of a “OpticsThoughts 2.0”, although as far as look at feel goes, it should not be a major difference from the original site.  We did change the backend for the site and, hopefully, it will be a bit easier to maintain.

Most of the material here is on the subject of sporting optics: riflescopes, binoculars and spotters.  I will occasionally add some general musing on the firearms, knives and whatever else occupies my mind at that particular time.  Since my day job is in electro-optics and digital imaging, I will also add some camera gear recommendation here and there.

I started this site primarily to have a venue for my thoughts on sporting optics, but it has expanded some.  Aside from writing about things that interest me, I also serve as an editor for others whose work occasionally appears here.

If you want to know more about how this site came to be and who are the people behind it, look into “About OpticsThoughts” on your right.

If all you are looking for is a quick product recommendation here is a shortcut to some of my favourites, by price: Riflescopes, Binoculars, Spotters.

Also, as I go along, I record my impressions on video and upload them to YouTube here.  Alternatively, you can simply search for DLO Reviews.

If you would like to comment on any of the articles you need to create an account here.  Contact me if you need help with that.

Lastly, I keep advertising very light and only insert a few Google or Amazon Ads here and there.  I do not have any control of what is actually in the ad, as it reflects whoever is browsing.  If you click on the ads every once in a while, maintaining this site will be easier for me.  If you will be buying something from Amazon anyway, click on the Amazon banner on this website.  It makes no practical difference to you, but every little bit adds up for me.

Where appropriate, I’ll add product links to retailers here and there.  Where the links go will vary a fair bit.  I have an affiliate contract with a few places (Amazon, Brownells, Adorama, etc).

If you would like to help me keep this site up, use the links, click on the ads or donate via Paypal at paypal.me/DarkLordOfOptics

With all that out of the way, I hope you find something useful here and if there is something you think I should add to the site, do not hesitate to let me know.

Thanks for visiting!

ZCO: Zero Compromise Optics

As I plan out my SHOT Show schedule, I stumbled onto a new riflescope company called “Zero Compromise Optics”: http://www.zcompoptic.com/ The webpage shows a couple of seemingly well thought out design and the rumor is that this is a new venture for Jeff Huber who ran Nightforce for many years and made an impact when ran […]

I hope Scottevest goes out of business.

Just saw this: http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2018/01/wow-scottevest-ceo-says-advertises-fox-news-viewers-gullible-fcking-idiots/. In a nutshell: the CEO of Scottevest clothing company is an arrogant jackass who just pissed off a significant portion of his customer base.  While I do not watch Fox news, this arrogance should not go unpunished. I do not care much what he believes in his private life, but this is […]

Short Riflescopes: New Shorty Vudu et al

This was prompted by a question I received on the Hide in this thread. Here is the actual question: “Ilya, just curious, what could be the optical or opto-mechanical compromises associated with super short scopes like this, if any?” I figured that it may take a little effort to write down, so instead, I talked […]

Shield announces RMS-C Red Dot for narrow slide guns

Shield announces RMS-C Red Dot for narrow slide guns

written on January 16, 2018 I do not usually post much about new product introductions, but this one addresses something I was just discussing, so I figured I should. I wrote a little bit about Shield red dot sights lately and I just so an announcement that they are introducing an even smaller version of […]

Elcan Spectre TR Review

Elcan Spectre TR Review

Elcan Spectre TR is a very unique riflescope. Elcan generally seems to march to the beat of their own drum and it seems to work out pretty well for them. I generally like Elcan products and have a lot of mileage with them. Some people like them. Some hate them. Few are ambivalent. I am […]

Customizing Ruger 10/22 TakeDown

My name is ILya and I am addicted to takedown rifles.  If there were a “Takedown Rifle Addicts Anonymous”, I would probably be a charter member.  The only thing that is stopping me from owning them all is the inadequacy of my wallet and the entirely indecent behavior of rifle manufacturers (how dare they expect […]

Website Monetization

I’ll do a little whining here, so bear with me.  I do not do that a whole lot. For those who visit this website regularly, you like noticed that I’ve got a lot more advertising in recent posts. Basically, it has dawned on me that I should really keep this hobby of mine revenue neutral.  […]

Burris XTR II 1-8x24

Burris XTR II 1-8×24

written by ILya Koshkin, December 2017 One of the goals I had for 2017 was to take a break from the stratospherically priced precision scopes I have been spending so much time on and take a closer look at products people can actually afford.  Also, since I have been shooting my various ARs a lot, […]

Shield Red Dot Sights, continued: Shield SIS

Shield Red Dot Sights, continued: Shield SIS

written by ILya Koshkin, December 2017 I started talking about Shield Sights here. Earlier I mostly focused on Shield’s RMS, which I primarily used on handguns.  Here, I will switch gears a bit and talk about Shield SIS, which is designed for use as a carbine optic. Until I ran into the Shield SIS, for […]

DMR Optic for SCAR 17

DMR Optic for SCAR 17

written by ILya Koshkin, December 2017 Fairly frequently, my blog posts here are a result of a question I receive in an e-mail or a private message on one of the forums I frequent.  This is one of those. The gentleman asked what I would choose to use on a SCAR 17 out of the […]
