Welcome to OpticsThoughts!

The website you are looking at is sort of a “OpticsThoughts 2.0”, although as far as look at feel goes, it should not be a major difference from the original site.  We did change the backend for the site and, hopefully, it will be a bit easier to maintain.

Most of the material here is on the subject of sporting optics: riflescopes, binoculars and spotters.  We will occasionally add some general musing on the firearms, knives and whatever else occupies my mind at that particular time.  Since my day job is in electro-optics and digital imaging, I will also add some camera gear recommendation here and there.

I started out this site primarily to have a venue for my thoughts on sporting optics, but it has expanded some.  Aside from writing about things that interest me, I also serve as an editor for others whose work appears here.

If you want to know more about how this site came to be and who are the people behind it, look into “About OpticsThoughts” on your right.

If all you are looking for is a quick product recommendation here is a shortcut to some of my favourites, by price: Riflescopes, Binoculars, Spotters.

Also, as I go along, I record my impressions on video and upload them to YouTube here.  Alternatively, you can simply search for DLO Reviews.

If you would like to comment on any of the articles you need to create an account here.  Contact me if you need help with that.

Lastly, I keep advertising very light and only insert a few Google or Amazon Ads here and there.  I do not have any control of what is actually in the ad, as it reflects whoever is browsing.  If you click on the ads every once in a while, maintaining this site will be easier for me.  If you will be buying something from Amazon anyway, click on the Amazon banner on this website.  It makes no practical difference to you, but every little bit adds up for me.

With that out of the way, I hope you find something useful here and if there is something you think I should add to the site, do not hesitate to let me know.

Thanks for visiting!

Shield Red Dot Sights

Shield Red Dot Sights

I have been looking at many red dot sights in the last couple of years both for handgun and carbine use. Honestly, there are several excellent ones that proved durable and well designed. I developed some personal preferences in terms of control methods, dot sizes, etc. I will have another longer piece on that some […]

Leica Customer Service: I like what I am seeing

I usually do not talk about customer service very much since it has generally been getting better for most brands even the ones that were not known for this in the past. For example, in years past Burris was not famous for great customer service, but they have really stepped up in that department (and […]

2 Wheel Gear Garment Bag

2 Wheel Gear Garment Bag

This is a little bit of a departure for me, but this particular post does not have anything to do with optics.  Now that we’ve got that shocking revelation out of the way, here is some background to this story. A couple of months ago, I had to go to France for work and it […]

Thinking about cameras. Again.

I glanced at the photography announcements and noticed that Leica has introduced a silver version of Leica Q.   It is just a styling change.  Aside from the cosmetics, the camera is the same. As some of you may recall, I used Leica Q for about a year and took some of the best pictures I […]

Mantis-X training tool

Every once in a while, I sorta step out of things that are within my range of expertise and talk about other things I experiment with.  That is why every once in a while you see me talk about somewhat random things, like bags, shirts and other accessories. Mantis X is an accessory that is […]

Vortex UH-1: First Look

Vortex UH-1: First Look

written in November, 2017 A couple of links to where you can buy this sight on Adorama and Amazon are at the bottom of this post This will be brief: I finally got the UH-1 onto a rifle and headed to the range.  The rifle in question is a comparatively light weight carbine with an […]

Reticles: FFP vs SFP

Reticles: FFP vs SFP

written in October 2017 I was talking to a friend of mine about reticles and the discussion, as is often the case, turned to reticle design.  Reticle design is important and, overall, has improved dramatically in recent years.  However, I still see some spectacularly boneheaded reticle design decisions on a regular basis (see a recent […]

Styrka S7 Riflescopes

Styrka S7 Riflescopes

written in October 2017 Since I was putting together a progress report of sorts, I also realized there are several scopes I have wrapped up with, but havn’t yet written anything about.  Among them are the two Styrka S7 scopes that I looked at late in 2016. First, a couple of words about the company.  […]

Progress Report

October 19, 2017.   I popped the safe open to do an inventory of sorts of the stuff I have on hand that still needs to be written up. This somehow creeped up on me, but there is a lot of stuff in there. I will stop accepting new review items for a bit, until […]
