Welcome to OpticsThoughts!

The website you are looking at is sort of a “OpticsThoughts 2.0″, although as far as look at feel goes, it should not be a major difference from the original site.  That having been said, we did change the backend for the site and, hopefully, it will be a bit easier to maintain.

Most of the material here is on the subject of sporting optics: riflescopes, binoculars and spotters.  We will occasionally add some general musing on the firearms, knives and whatever else occupies my mind at that particular time.  Since my day job is in electro-optics and digital imaging, I will also add some camera gear recommendation here and there.

I started out this site primarily to have a venue for my thoughts on sporting optics, but it has expanded some.  Aside from writing about things that interest me, I also serve as a editor for others whose work appears here.

If you want to know more about how this site came to be and he are the people behind it, look into “About Opticsthoughts” on your right.

If all you are looking for is a quick product recommendation here is a shortcut to some of my favourites, by price: Riflescopes, Binoculars, Spotters.

If you would like to comment on any of the articles you need to create an account here.  Contact me if you need help with that.

With that out of the way, I hope you find something useful here and if there is something you think I should add to the site, do not hesitate to let me know.

Thanks for visiting!

Compact AR scope article is up

After a fair amount of testing, here is my take on three compact AR scopes: Trijicon ACOG 4×32, Elcan SpectreOS 4×32 and Leupold HAMR 4×24 http://opticsthoughts.com/?page_id=1344 One thing I want to add is that after I got done with my tests, i was approached by Mark from Macedon Defense, who makes an adapter (called KRAM) [...]

A question on AR/Tavor/AUG scopes

Here is a question I received via e-mail: “Not having had the opportunity to have hands on experience with as many scopes as you have, I thought I’d see if you could recommend one (or several) to me. Here’s the situation: I have a 1.5-6 Spectre DR on a SCAR16, and another on a SCAR17, [...]

Zeiss Terra 3x 3-9×42 review is up

http://opticsthoughts.com/?page_id=1324 I have a gnawing suspicion that this will not endear me to the Zeiss folks.  Oh well.

Vortex Razor HD Gen 2 4.5-27×56

I was fortunate enough to be able to test this scope pretty early on and to say that I like it would be a major understatement. I have posted the review on OpticsTalk for the time being: http://www.opticstalk.com/vortex-razor-gen-2-4527x56_topic39586.html I will likely make a few minor edits and then I will also post the article here [...]

Pocket guns

Written by ILya Koshkin, 2/24/2014 Before I get started with this, I have to make a confession: I do not know all that much about pocket guns.  I live in California and getting a concealed carry license where I live is about as likely as winning a lottery.  Now that I think about it, winning [...]

4x AR scopes

4x AR scopes

One of the things that has been frustrating me recently is the fact that most low range variable scopes that are intended for AR carbines are a bit on the heavy side. They typically weigh somewhere in the 16 to 22 ounce range.  A decent single piece mount adds a few more ounces and by [...]

New binocular article

I have been so focused on riflescopes lately that I neglected the other optical devices that I originally promised to keep looking at.  Here is an article on three binoculars that I spent considerable amount of time using side-by-side with each other. http://opticsthoughts.com/?page_id=1289   ILya
