Welcome to OpticsThoughts!

The website you are looking at is sort of a “OpticsThoughts 2.0”, although as far as look at feel goes, it should not be a major difference from the original site.  That having been said, we did change the backend for the site and, hopefully, it will be a bit easier to maintain.

Most of the material here is on the subject of sporting optics: riflescopes, binoculars and spotters.  We will occasionally add some general musing on the firearms, knives and whatever else occupies my mind at that particular time.  Since my day job is in electro-optics and digital imaging, I will also add some camera gear recommendation here and there.

I started out this site primarily to have a venue for my thoughts on sporting optics, but it has expanded some.  Aside from writing about things that interest me, I also serve as a editor for others whose work appears here.

If you want to know more about how this site came to be and he are the people behind it, look into “About Opticsthoughts” on your right.

If all you are looking for is a quick product recommendation here is a shortcut to some of my favourites, by price: Riflescopes, Binoculars, Spotters.

If you would like to comment on any of the articles you need to create an account here.  Contact me if you need help with that.

With that out of the way, I hope you find something useful here and if there is something you think I should add to the site, do not hesitate to let me know.

Thanks for visiting!

Camera suggestions – December 2016

In the modern market, most cameras introduced are pretty decent.  There is a major paradigm shift going on, where traditional fixed lens digital still cameras have been effectively displaced by new categories of photographic devices, most notably cell phones.  All the different compact digital cameras that use fairly small sensors are effectively obsolete, with a […]

Haeleum Darian Insect repellent shirt

Talking about clothing is a bit of a departure for me, but a little while ago, I ran into a guy who got Lyme disease from a tick.  That got me thinking about insect repelling sprays, clothing, etc.  While I was at it, I tried to find something that is also moisture-wicking and offers some […]

TNW ASR: Update

As I mentioned, I sent an e-mail off to TNW to get their take on what is happening with my rifle. TNW ASR: More Problems The e-mail was sent off on Friday in the afternoon.  At 8AM on Monday morning, I had a reply from the general manager of TNW: Good morning, I apologize for […]

TNW ASR: More Problems

Following on the hills of the initial issues I had, my problems with the TNW ASR are continuing.  Here is the previous post on this subject: http://opticsthoughts.com/?p=1696 I finally managed to get a couple of hundred rounds through it and since it is still about as reliable as a politician’s promise, I sent TNW’s tech […]

TNW ASR in 10mm, first shots

TNW ASR in 10mm, first shots

I mentioned this little carbine a while back: Pistol Caliber Carbines from TNW Firearms I finally managed to get my hands on one in 10mm and dragged it out to the range together with my longslide Glock that takes the same magazines. I really like the concept of this carbine: it is easy to take […]

High End Tactical, Part V: The Cruiserweights

High End Tactical, Part V: The Cruiserweights

written by ILya Koshkin, September 2016   High End Tactical Part V: The Cruiserweights   I called the previous High End Tactical article “The Heavyweights” and figured I can stick with the martial arts analogy for this one.  Since the scopes I am looking at are a bit smaller, I figured I can call it […]

I want to learn to shoot out to 1000 yards….

Written on 8/13/2016 by ILya Koshkin I see this question pop up a lot: “I just bought a “fill in the blank” rifle and I want to learn to shoot it out to 1000 yards, what scope should I use?” Many people much more qualified than I am have written on this subject, so there […]

Levenhuk Sherman Pro 6.5×32

Written by ILya Koshkin, July 2016 Levenhuk Serman Pro 6.5×32 If you look up a brand name “Levenhuk”, you’ll see all sorts of products that would ordinarily be outside of the scope of the things I look at. The folks at Levenhuk reached out to me through my website asking if I want to review […]

BigJimFish review of the U.S. Optics LR-17 3.2-17×44 Illuminated Optic

BigJimFish Reviews the U.S. Optics LR-17 3.2-17x44mm rifle scope. This optical design has been on the market for and number of years and remains a poignant illustration that, in optics, new models are not necessarily better than older ones and that computer assisted optical design often fails to produce products as well optimized as those produced by older hands on methods.

More on Razor HD LH 3-15×42

Written by ILya Koshkin 7/12/2016   A little while back, a gentleman named Matt contacted me with questions regarding the Razor HD LH.  While my full review is not out yet, I have spent a fair amount of time with these scopes and like them a lot.  They are about to land on my list […]
