Welcome to OpticsThoughts!

The website you are looking at is sort of a “OpticsThoughts 2.0”, although as far as look at feel goes, it should not be a major difference from the original site.  That having been said, we did change the backend for the site and, hopefully, it will be a bit easier to maintain.

Most of the material here is on the subject of sporting optics: riflescopes, binoculars and spotters.  We will occasionally add some general musing on the firearms, knives and whatever else occupies my mind at that particular time.  Since my day job is in electro-optics and digital imaging, I will also add some camera gear recommendation here and there.

I started out this site primarily to have a venue for my thoughts on sporting optics, but it has expanded some.  Aside from writing about things that interest me, I also serve as a editor for others whose work appears here.

If you want to know more about how this site came to be and he are the people behind it, look into “About Opticsthoughts” on your right.

If all you are looking for is a quick product recommendation here is a shortcut to some of my favourites, by price: Riflescopes, Binoculars, Spotters.

If you would like to comment on any of the articles you need to create an account here.  Contact me if you need help with that.

With that out of the way, I hope you find something useful here and if there is something you think I should add to the site, do not hesitate to let me know.

Thanks for visiting!

High End Tactical, Part V: The Cruiserweights

written by ILya Koshkin, September 2016   High End Tactical Part V: The Cruiserweights   I called the previous High End Tactical article “The Heavyweights” and figured I can stick with the martial arts analogy for this one.  Since the scopes I am looking at are a bit smaller, I figured I can call it […]

I want to learn to shoot out to 1000 yards….

Written on 8/13/2016 by ILya Koshkin I see this question pop up a lot: “I just bought a “fill in the blank” rifle and I want to learn to shoot it out to 1000 yards, what scope should I use?” Many people much more qualified than I am have written on this subject, so there […]

BigJimFish review of the U.S. Optics LR-17 3.2-17×44 Illuminated Optic

BigJimFish Reviews the U.S. Optics LR-17 3.2-17x44mm rifle scope. This optical design has been on the market for and number of years and remains a poignant illustration that, in optics, new models are not necessarily better than older ones and that computer assisted optical design often fails to produce products as well optimized as those produced by older hands on methods.

More on Camera Selection

So, I got a Leica Q.  It is a fixed lens camera with a a prime 28mm focal length lens, bright F/1.7 max aperture and a full frame 24 megapixel image sensor. The camera is absolutely superb.  I posted a few pictures earlier and I will post a few more here and there, but it […]

Leica Q

I have written about enthusiast compact cameras a bit earlier on (here). Since then, I got myself a Leica Q and took it on vacation to Israel.  I like it so far.  Here are a few images:

BigJimFish review of the Minox ZP8 1-8x24mm Illuminated Optic

BigJimFish reviews the Minox ZP8 1-8x a scope designed by the folks at Optronika, formally of Premier reticles partnership, and bearing the optical design that was originally shown in the Premier 1-8x prototype. Having chased these folks, and this scope, around for some time I was quite pleased to find that, with Minox, a production scope is now available. See how it does in testing.

Pistol Caliber Carbines from TNW Firearms

As we get closer to the presidential election my various politician induced paranoias bubble up to the surface and make me think about survival guns.  Now, I do not think that the end of the world is coming just, but anything that gives me an excuse to get another gun is fine with me. All […]

Sig Optics

Sig Optics

I received a couple of items from Sig Electro Optics to look at: Tango 6 3-18×44 riflescope and Romeo 4C red dot. I did a very brief side by side of the Tango 6 against Leupodl Mark 6 3-18×44 and Nightforce ATACR F1 4-16×42 and the Tango6 is holding its own pretty well.  It is […]
